North Carolina Civil War Military Conscription Pool

This table ranks North Carolina by their ability to provide soldiers to the Confederate government. The first data column gives the total white population from the 1860 Census. The second column shows the number of men who had volunteered for Confederate service by November 1861 from the Charlotte Western Democrat March 18, 1862. The third data column expresses this number as a percentage of the 1860 population. The last column shows the probable number of military aged white men in each county. This was calculated by me, using 20.4% of the white population, after counting a number of counties and determining that this was the approximate ratio of men in the conscription age zone at some time during the war.
